Projecting Through a Translucent Sheet

Extending on the ephemeral environment I created on Monday, I decided to build another environment. However, this time I joint the pieces of material using a glue gun. I chose to do this as I wanted to be able to move the structure around to explore different ways of creating drawings through projection. I feel this structure portrays a sense of destruction as I have built it up connecting the scraps of materials spontaneously. It gives the impression it is a building that has suffered destruction. I feel that by projecting this structure in different ways will allow me to suggest a process of reconstruction.

The set-up...

I decided to experiment with any loose materials that I could find around the studio space and that I could see becoming potentially interesting. I particularly like the projection caused from adding wire to the structure I had built.

I definately feel I would like to continue working with the idea of projecting a structure through a sheet to create a shadow drawing. I can envisage this idea would be very effective in the final exhibition. I now just have to really think about what I am actually going to include in the final exhibition piece.

Crunchtime.

The exhibition is fast approaching! The week just passed and the next week coming are essential for the FMP. The aim is to spend as much time in the studio space as possible experimenting with current ideas and different ways of exploring these.

Here I was thinking about creating a landscape in a state of destruction or reconstruction, but when I project the shadow against the wall, the projection reflects constructon.

Wood, metal, plastic and cardboard spontaneously layed down to create this ephemeral environment.

Taking a step back, I thought the idea became more interesting.



Group Critique

The past week I have been concentrating on exploring ideas through scale and form within my sketchbook. I have been trying to refine ideas for what I could perhaps do for my final exhibition for the Final Major Project.

For group critique we were required to present a piece of current work that we feel is most relevant and interesting.

I decided to go with a double-page spread within my sketchbook, which includes these two images.     

 

FEEDBACK

• The light in the image makes the structure seem on fire.
• Brightness could also indicate illusion of sunlight, giving the image a real sense of landscape.
• I could consider adding text to go with the work.
• Working with 2D and 3D - projecting the structure created and changing the form through drawing.
• Using light and structure as a means of drawing.
• Could consider the idea of offering a Utopia? Links back to previous work I have done.
• Explore the idea of creating temporary structures/landscapes further.



Experimenting with Projection

I managed to get hold of an overhead projector for the afternoon so that I could explore possibilities of projection.

The idea of placing blocks of wood randomly onto the projector and seeing how the projected drawing turns out was really exciting. It was also exciting to try and manipulate the materials place by working from the drawing created, or by adding more/different materials to make a more interesting shadow.

I sometimes get a bit carried away with my camera and experiment with different ways of seeing something. By taking random snaps from various angles I can achieve interesting accidental images.

Very ephemeral structure.
